When the FBI Comes Calling…®
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
Formed in 1949 and remaining one of the world's defining international security constructions, NATO helped defend the world from the spread of Soviet communism. Today, in the changing climate of world affairs, NATO too is changing, taking on an important role in both peacekeeping operations worldwide and in combating international terrorism. Included in the NATO charter is Article 5, the collective security clause, which says that an attack on one member state is an attack on all member states. This article was invoked for the first and only time following the World Trade Center and Pentagon hijacked aircraft attacks on September 11, 2001.
An important part of the NATO mission has always been the sharing of intelligence, security, and military forces in furtherance of common security goals. To serve this end in 1994, NATO created the Partnership for Peace (PfP) program, aimed at incorporating former Warsaw Pact communist states in Central and Eastern Europe into the common security functions of organization, without extending full membership.
